A watch party for the Rams-49ers season opener at Cosm in Inglewood turned into what one witness called a WWE-style brawl, with video showing a shirtless Rams fan launching himself over a row of seats to strike a 49ers fan already on the ground. The fight sent food and tables flying inside the venue near SoFi Stadium.
The footage, posted to Instagram on Friday and credited to user __julio4024, shows the Thursday-night confrontation escalating after the two men argued, according to New York Post. The video's poster said the man in the white t-shirt started the argument and had been calling out Los Angeles Rams names back and forth, and claimed the shirtless man had respectfully asked him to stop bothering him up to four times before the fight broke out. The clip cuts off before showing what happened next, and the Post could not establish whether either fan suffered serious injuries or whether police were called to the scene.
Why Fans Gathered to Watch the Game
The Week 1 matchup being screened wasn't even played in the United States. The Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers opened the 2026 season at the 100,024-capacity Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne, Australia, marking the NFL's first-ever regular season game held there, according to the Hindustan Times. With kickoff happening on the other side of the planet, Cosm became a local hub for Southern California Rams fans and Northern California 49ers fans to watch together in person. The 49ers ended up defeating the Rams 27-7 to open their season, per the Post's report.
Cosm's Inglewood venue, which opened in June 2024 inside the Hollywood Park development across from SoFi Stadium, is a 65,000-square-foot space built around an 87-foot 12K-plus LED dome screen with room for up to 1,700 guests, according to Cosm. The NFL and Cosm extended a multi-year partnership in August 2025 to broadcast regular season, playoff, and Super Bowl games in what the companies call “Shared Reality,” as detailed by Sportcal. That deal is what turned an overseas away game into a packed local gathering for rival fan bases.
A Rivalry With a History of Violence in Inglewood
This isn't the first time Rams and 49ers fans have clashed physically in the area. A January 2022 parking lot fight outside SoFi Stadium left 40-year-old 49ers fan Daniel Luna in a medically induced coma, according to the Los Angeles Times. Los Angeles County prosecutors later charged 33-year-old Rams fan Bryan Alexis Cifuentes with felony battery with serious bodily injury after surveillance footage captured a brief shove-and-punch altercation in that case, the paper reported.
Other fights have broken out in recent years, including an incident where a spectator was thrown over a railing following a Chargers game. A September 2025 fight between fans during a Houston Texans-Rams game at SoFi Stadium left a spectator bloodied, per the Times of India. The Rams-49ers rivalry itself stretches back to 1950, with 155 all-time meetings through this September fueled by decades of Northern-versus-Southern California competition, according to Wikipedia.
If anyone involved in the Cosm brawl is identified and charged, possible legal consequences would depend on the allegations. It remains unclear whether any charges will stem from Thursday's incident.
