After years of running at or near capacity in Oakland, Pittsburgh’s Fisher House network is about to get some breathing room. VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System plans to build a second Fisher House on the H.J. Heinz III VA Medical Center campus in O’Hara Township, adding 16 private suites and a major boost in free, short-term lodging for military and veteran families. Construction is slated to begin this spring, and supporters say the new house could open in 2027. Local backers with Friends of the Pittsburgh Fisher House have already met their fundraising goal to help furnish the property, while national and federal partners will pick up the remaining construction and operations tab.
According to Friends of the Pittsburgh Fisher House, the group’s capital campaign hit $3 million, clearing the way for work to start this spring. TribLIVE reports the overall price tag is roughly $11 million and that the new building is expected to welcome its first guests in 2027.
The original 10-suite Pittsburgh Fisher House on the University Drive campus opened in 2012 and has already provided about 33,500 days of free lodging to more than 9,240 guests, saving veterans and families an estimated $3.9 million in hotel costs and related expenses. VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System serves more than 91,000 veterans a year, a volume that hospital leaders say highlights the need for more family lodging near specialty care, according to VA Pittsburgh Health Care.
What a Fisher House Provides
Fisher Houses are built to be a home away from home for families that need to stay close while a loved one receives medical care. Each guest suite includes a private bedroom and bathroom, while families share common kitchens, stocked refrigerators, laundry rooms, dining areas, and living spaces, according to the Fisher House Foundation. The foundation says the national network now includes about 100 houses that together have provided more than 13.4 million days of lodging to roughly 570,000 families, saving households hundreds of millions of dollars in lodging and travel costs.
Local Leaders, Families Welcome Expansion
Veterans advocates and families are treating the Heinz campus project as a major milestone. As TribLIVE notes, Pittsburgh is shifting from having the state’s only Fisher House to having two, a point of pride for local supporters and a practical response to the consistently high occupancy at the Oakland site since 2012.
Timeline And How To Follow Progress
With construction set to kick off this spring, Friends of the Pittsburgh Fisher House says it will use its project page to post construction updates, projected timelines, and opportunities to donate furnishings for guest rooms and shared spaces. VA officials say the second house will complement services at both the University Drive and Heinz campuses while expanding lodging capacity for families across the system, according to VA Pittsburgh Health Care.
