Earlier yesterday, a 75-year-old Spring Hill man was killed after he was struck by multiple vehicles while trying to cross U.S. 19, authorities said. He was pronounced dead at the scene on the highway just south of Long Lake Avenue in Hernando County.
Crash Details
According to the Tampa Free Press, the Florida Highway Patrol said the collision happened at about 4:38 a.m. yesterday. Troopers reported that a Ford F-350 towing a trailer hit the pedestrian in the southbound outside lane of U.S. 19.
Investigators identified the driver of the pickup as a 47-year-old man from Tennessee. He stayed at the scene, and troopers said the victim was then struck by several other vehicles that may have included a white sedan and a black SUV, according to the Tampa Free Press. The chain of impacts is now a key focus of the ongoing investigation.
Why This Stretch Is Hazardous
Pedestrian crashes remain a serious problem across Florida. Recent analysis from the Governors Highway Safety Association shows pedestrian fatalities have stayed high statewide.
Higher speeds, poor lighting and wide multi-lane roadways like stretches of U.S. 19 increase the risk for people trying to cross. Listings from FDOT show ongoing repaving and lane projects along the corridor that can change traffic patterns and visibility for pedestrians, adding another layer of complexity for drivers and people on foot.
Officials Seek Witnesses
State troopers are asking anyone who drove through the area around the time of the crash, or who may have dash-cam footage, to contact the Florida Highway Patrol, according to the Tampa Free Press. They are trying to identify every vehicle involved and reconstruct how the fatal sequence unfolded.
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles maintains a crash portal and notes that traffic crash reports may take up to 10 days to appear online on its Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles site. Members of the public with tips or video were urged to call *FHP (*347), troopers said.
Investigators noted that the case remains open and that they will release updates as they become available. Anyone with information is asked to reach out to FHP so troopers can determine who else may have been involved and how the deadly crash unfolded.
