How LAFD Described the Call
According to LAFD, the incident was labeled a "KNOCKDOWN" at 150 S Mountain View Ave, with the alert pointing readers to a map and a separate details link for responding units. Fire Station 20 was listed among the companies on scene, and the department did not provide information in that initial post about injuries or whether anyone was forced out of the building.
What "Knockdown" Really Means
In firefighter speak, a "knockdown" means crews have beaten back the main body of visible flames and are shifting into overhaul and stabilization mode. As Fire Engineering explains, knockdown is a key operational benchmark that signals control of active fire, even while work at the scene continues. It does not automatically mean the incident is over, since firefighters often stay on site to chase hotspots and secure the structure.
Westlake's Recent Fire Fights
Westlake has seen its share of serious fires in recent years. In February 2023, a blaze in the neighborhood drew more than 150 firefighters and triggered a multi-agency response. As detailed by LAFD, that earlier fire spread from a vacant home to nearby apartment buildings and prompted an investigation by the Arson Section. The neighborhood's density and older housing stock can increase the risk of displacement when major fires break out.
"Arson Section is actively investigating the cause of the fire," the department said in its 2023 update, a line documented by LAFD. At this early stage, LAFD has not said whether arson personnel will be assigned to today's call at 150 S Mountain View Ave.
This story will be updated as officials release more information on possible injuries, evacuations or the cause of the fire. For immediate safety concerns or to report an emergency, call 911.
