An early-morning single-vehicle crash on eastbound Interstate 270 near Lilac Avenue in north St. Louis County on Monday left one person dead and another injured, shutting down all eastbound lanes while troopers and emergency crews worked the scene and cleared the wreckage.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene and a passenger was transported to a hospital. Troopers continue to investigate and have not released the identities of those involved.
Traffic and response
Local station FOX2 first reported the crash and said it happened shortly after 5:40 a.m. All eastbound lanes were closed at Lilac Avenue, with traffic detoured west of the interchange while emergency responders handled the scene.
Why this stretch matters
Per the Missouri Department of Transportation, the I-270 corridor around Lilac Avenue has been identified as a higher-crash stretch and is part of targeted education and enforcement efforts. Those measures are intended to reduce collisions on some of the region's busiest interstate segments.
Troopers said their investigation remains active and that more details will be available once a formal crash report is filed. The Missouri State Highway Patrol's crash log and local outlets are expected to post updates as investigators complete their work.
