A late-night crash on Rancho Drive turned deadly Friday when a vehicle struck a bicyclist near Sunset Drive, shutting down southbound lanes and freezing traffic across the central valley. The rider was rushed to a nearby hospital by emergency crews and later pronounced dead, as first responders remained on scene into the late evening.
Las Vegas police said the crash happened around 7:45 p.m. when a vehicle hit a bicyclist in the intersection, according to KSNV. The driver stayed at the scene and, according to officers, showed signs of impairment, the station reported. KSNV also noted that the Regional Transportation Commission reported all southbound lanes were blocked and warned drivers to take alternate routes while investigators worked the area.
In an update, KTNV reported that Rancho Drive was closed between Vegas Drive and Washington Avenue into the late evening while police processed the scene. Traffic was diverted and motorists were urged to use different north–south routes to get around the corridor.
Where This Stretch Ranks
Rancho Drive is a major north–south artery already under an 18‑month stretch of round‑the‑clock lane restrictions tied to a roughly $30 million overhaul earlier this year, according to 24/7 lane squeeze. A Regional Transportation Commission corridor study documents heavy traffic volumes and a history of crashes along the route, which can magnify disruption when lanes are shut for serious investigations; see the RTC study for more on the corridor.
Investigation Ongoing
Las Vegas police traffic detectives are handling the case and told KSNV that toxicology testing and crash reconstruction are expected to be part of the review. Officials have not released the bicyclist’s name and have not announced any charges.
Potential Legal Implications
Police said the driver showed signs of impairment at the scene. If testing confirms impairment, the case could lead to DUI or other traffic-related charges under Nevada law. Nevada’s DUI statutes are laid out in Chapter 484C of the Nevada Revised Statutes, which details prohibited acts and penalties for driving under the influence (NRS Chapter 484C).
