Tristan Bass‑Krueger, a 32‑year‑old PhD student at the University of Rochester, was arrested in Atlanta on March 25, 2026, and is facing federal charges that include production, distribution and possession of child pornography, as well as enticement of a minor. Prosecutors say the case centers on online contacts and images involving a 14‑year‑old. After his arrest, Bass‑Krueger made an initial court appearance in Georgia, was ordered held in custody and is expected to be returned to the Western District of New York for prosecution. If convicted, he faces a possible life sentence and fines of up to $250,000.
According to 13WHAM, the investigation began after a woman reported on Feb. 12, 2026, that her 14‑year‑old child had exchanged sexual images with someone using the Tinder handle "Tristan." Prosecutors say investigators later pulled WhatsApp messages and a video of a sexual encounter from the teenager’s phone and allege that Bass‑Krueger picked the youth up at their home on Feb. 4 and spent about five hours with them.
Bass‑Krueger is listed as a graduate student in the University of Rochester's Visual and Cultural Studies program, according to the University of Rochester. In a statement to 13WHAM, a university spokesperson said Bass‑Krueger has been "prohibited from entering campus" and that officials are cooperating with law enforcement.
Charges and penalties
Federal law criminalizes the production of sexually explicit images involving minors under 18 U.S.C. §2251, while distribution and possession offenses are brought under 18 U.S.C. §2252. Coercion and enticement of a minor is charged under 18 U.S.C. §2422(b). These statutes carry significant penalties and, in some circumstances, mandatory minimum sentences. The Department of Justice's Project Safe Childhood program coordinates federal, state and local efforts to investigate and prosecute technology‑facilitated child exploitation.
What happens next
Bass‑Krueger remains in custody while federal authorities arrange his transfer to the Western District of New York for further court proceedings. Officials are asking anyone who may have information about the case or potential witnesses to contact the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, which took the initial report and lists its headquarters at 130 South Plymouth Avenue in Rochester.
