A Georgia Bureau of Investigation-coordinated undercover sting in Houston County earlier this month ended with 24 people in handcuffs and more than a dozen others identified as possible victims, according to state officials. The multi-agency push zeroed in on sex traffickers and people trying to buy sex in the area.
In a press release, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said the effort, dubbed "Operation Rockin' Robins," ran from March 4-6 after months of planning and was led by the agency's Human Exploitation and Trafficking (HEAT) Unit. The Houston County Sheriff’s Office, the GBI Middle Georgia Gang Task Force, the Georgia State Patrol and Homeland Security Investigations all took part in the online undercover operation.
As reported by WGXA, those arrested range in age from 17 to 61 and came from around Middle Georgia to Houston County with the intent to buy or sell commercial sex. The outlet published a rundown of names and charges, which include pandering, pimping and several drug-related counts.
How the sting worked
The GBI says investigators carried out an online undercover operation, posing as both buyers and sellers on websites and apps. The goal was to flag people trying to purchase sex and to identify those exploiting them. Victim advocates were on-site throughout the operation. According to the agency, 13 commercial sex workers met with those advocates and were offered services and support.
Arrests, charges and next steps
WGXA reports that those facing charges include Ahmad Rice, 25, of Perry (pandering); Armon Khalil Taylor, 29, of Warner Robins (pandering); and Jeffery Michael McKay, 45, of Warner Robins (pimping along with drug and weapon charges), among others. Once the investigative work is wrapped up, the case file is expected to be handed over to the Houston Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office and the Houston County Solicitor-General’s Office for prosecution, the station notes.
What locals should know
Law enforcement officials say operations like this are aimed at cutting into the demand for commercial sex while also giving people being exploited a way out. Anyone with information is urged to contact the GBI HEAT Unit or the Houston County Sheriff’s Office, and Georgia's statewide human trafficking hotline is available around the clock for people seeking help or to report suspected trafficking.
