Saint Louis head coach Josh Schertz is staying put in the Gateway City, pulling his name from consideration for the open NC State men’s basketball job on Sunday afternoon, according to multiple reports. Schertz met with NC State athletic director Boo Corrigan on Saturday, then told people afterward he planned to remain at Saint Louis, a decision that keeps the Billikens steady while the Wolfpack keep hunting for a new leader following Will Wade’s abrupt departure from Raleigh.
According to The News & Observer, Schertz was among a small group of targets that also included Justin Gainey and Bob Richey. After meeting with Corrigan, Schertz informed NC State on Sunday that he was withdrawing from the search and intended to stay with the Billikens rather than pursue the Wolfpack vacancy.
Schertz Had Just Been Locked In
Saint Louis had already moved this month to secure its coach for the long haul, with athletic director Chris May confirming a contract extension, per ESPN. Under Schertz, the Billikens powered their way to a 29-6 season and a 102-77 first-round NCAA Tournament win over Georgia, before bowing out to No. 1 seed Michigan in the second round, according to CBS Sports.
What It Means For The Pack
Schertz’s choice takes one of the hotter mid-major names off NC State’s short list and forces the Wolfpack to pivot in a coaching market that is already moving fast. The News & Observer reported that the school had zeroed in on a compact group of candidates, and with Schertz out, will have to turn to other options and internal evaluations.
For Saint Louis, the outcome is simple and welcome: stability. Schertz can dive back into recruiting and offseason planning with his future settled. For NC State, Corrigan and his staff are back to resetting the board and racing the calendar, trying to land the right coach while rosters around the country start to churn in the wake of March’s usual coaching carousel.
