A 19-year-old Clearwater woman is behind bars after an alleged street race on Jan. 7 left three people hospitalized, including one with a traumatic brain injury. The crash happened around 7:16 a.m. on Seminole Boulevard and involved a Chevy Tahoe and a Mazda SUV, which investigators say was left with catastrophic damage. The woman is being held without bond as court filings move forward.
Affidavit details
According to a Pinellas County arrest affidavit reported by Tampa Bay 28, the driver, identified as Taylor Harvey, was in a Chevy Tahoe at about 7:16 a.m. when witnesses and surveillance video captured her racing another vehicle on Seminole Boulevard. The affidavit states that Harvey pulled ahead of the other car and then slammed into a Mazda SUV, leaving the smaller vehicle with catastrophic damage.
What the law says
Under Florida law, reckless driving that causes serious bodily injury is treated as a third-degree felony and can bring prison time along with fines. The state traffic code defines reckless driving as operating a vehicle in willful or wanton disregard for safety, according to the Florida Senate.
Injuries, data and booking
The affidavit says a Crash Data Retrieval report showed Harvey's Tahoe traveling 91 mph in a 45 mph zone immediately before impact. Three people inside the Mazda suffered serious injuries: a front-seat passenger with a traumatic brain injury and other internal wounds, the driver with a broken pelvis and multiple broken bones who could not walk, and a back-seat passenger with a torn stomach and additional internal injuries. Harvey was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on no bond, according to the affidavit reported to Tampa Bay 28.
Where the case goes next
Harvey's booking was into the county detention center, and upcoming public records and court filings will determine whether prosecutors move forward with felony charges beyond the reckless driving count. The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office oversees inmate processing and public records for the detention facility and provides resources for anyone seeking crash reports or custody information.
Community impact
Local officers and safety advocates say street racing on busy roads puts bystanders and other drivers at grave risk, and the severity of this collision drives that point home. Investigators continue to review video footage and the arrest affidavit, and the criminal case remains open as prosecutors weigh the evidence and potential charges.
