A quiet Seminole Heights block turned into an active crime scene late Sunday morning after Tampa police found a woman dead inside a neighborhood home.
Officers were called to the 3000 block of West Wilder Avenue just before 11:45 a.m. for a report of an unresponsive person. When they went inside, they found an adult woman who was not breathing. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and detectives quickly taped off the block while they went in and out of the house and spoke with nearby residents.
Police on scene
According to the Tampa Free Press, the department said in a statement that "Detectives are actively working to determine the circumstances of the death." Investigators described the case as an active investigation that is still in its early stages.
Neighborhood history
Seminole Heights is no stranger to heavy police presence. The neighborhood drew national attention in 2017 during a series of killings that led to a massive search effort and repeated canvasses of the streets. The Washington Post reported extensively on that earlier investigation and how it rattled residents.
What remains unknown
So far, authorities have not released the victim's name or said how she died. The Tampa Free Press notes that neighbors looked on from porches and yards as detectives worked the scene, and that police have promised more information as the investigation moves forward.
