After yet another smash-and-run, the owner of Platform Z says the latest act of vandalism might be the one that shuts her Main Street restaurant down. Over the weekend someone punched through one of the front windows, leaving thousands of dollars in damage and forcing a temporary closure. Staff quickly covered the broken pane with a tarp while they figure out whether it makes any sense to shell out for another round of commercial-grade glass. Video from inside the restaurant shows the moment the window was hit, a jarring clip that left employees rattled.
Speaking with 6abc, owner Anna Yu estimated this latest repair will run about $3,500. She said it is the fourth time Platform Z has been hit. In previous incidents, someone sliced through the wires to the restaurant’s air conditioning compressor, which she said cost about $1,700 to fix. Yu has reported the most recent case to police and says the mounting damage is making it harder and harder to keep the doors open.
Platform Z lists its Manayunk location at 4321 Main St and highlights ramen, poke bowls and bubble tea on its website, along with a second outpost in Bala Cynwyd and online ordering for both spots. The storefront uses historic-style glass that is pricier than standard panes, which Yu says helps explain why every break-in hits the balance sheet so hard. For small Main Street businesses that live or die on weekend crowds, surprise repair bills can quickly turn into a crisis.
Main Street Has Seen Other Late-Night Vandalism
Platform Z is not the only shop feeling the sting. Main Street has seen a run of property damage in recent months, including a December incident on the 4200 block where police released surveillance footage of a man they say vandalized a business, according to NBC10. The pattern has business owners increasingly worried about late-night crowds and what they see as stretched police coverage during the busiest hours.
Owner Wants More Patrols
Yu told 6abc she wants the city to beef up weekend police patrols as summer approaches, saying the emotional and financial strain has been intense. "Stupidity of people causes good people like me the financial and emotional burden," she said. With windows and a compressor already fixed once, Yu says she is now running the numbers on whether another repair is even sustainable.
For the moment, the tarp is still taped over the shattered window and hours have been adjusted while the owner decides what to do next. Yu says she wants to stay in Manayunk, but with the vandalism piling up, the future of Platform Z on Main Street is far from guaranteed.
