Shaq’s Big Chicken has gone quiet in Genesee County. The Vienna Township outpost in Clio, at 11476 N. Linden Road, is now dark and locked, with a closed sign greeting anyone who pulls into the parking lot. The restaurant, which opened to the public in February 2024, had no staff on site and no lights on, according to neighbors and would-be customers who showed up this week expecting fried chicken, not a shut door.
As reported by MLive, a notice dated March 19 instructed that the building not be used as a food service establishment without contacting the Genesee County Health Department. The notice was posted on the property, and the sign on the door confirmed the sudden closure. MLive also reported that a message left seeking comment from Big Chicken had not been returned.
Big Chicken still lists the Clio address at 11476 N. Linden Rd on its locations page, suggesting the corporate site has not yet caught up with reality on the ground. The company also shows Michigan entries in Hartland and Livonia. Local franchise representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment from reporters.
The chain's expansion into Michigan was part of an August 2023 push to open nearly two dozen outlets across eastern Michigan, a plan reported at the time by WNEM. That rollout positioned Clio as the state's first Big Chicken location, with franchise agreements flagging additional sites across metro Detroit, Ann Arbor and Lansing. The abrupt closure in Vienna Township stands in sharp contrast to those earlier expansion promises.
Health department order and what it means
The notice on the Clio building points to an enforcement action by county environmental health officials, who can require an immediate stop to food operations when conditions threaten public health. As outlined by Genesee County environmental health regulations, "An order of immediate cessation is effective upon service of the notice," and affected operators have a limited window to petition for review. In practice, that means the business must address whatever violations the county cites before officials will clear it to resume food service.
Big Chicken's broader track record
Big Chicken has seen a number of short runs and occasional shutdowns in other markets, a pattern documented in local reporting, including a Las Vegas closure. Those accounts show how storefronts sometimes shut down faster than corporate directories and delivery apps are updated. The Clio shutdown fits a pattern in which openings and pullbacks can happen quickly in different cities.
MLive said it sought comment from Big Chicken and that the company had not returned a message left for comment, and the Genesee County notice did not include details about the specific violations that prompted the action. Nearby residents and customers told local reporters they were surprised by the sudden closure. Public records and health department filings will ultimately show whether the Clio location reopens or remains closed.
