A Sheffield Village woman says a simple mistake at the lottery counter turned into a six-figure surprise on Friday the 13th. She accidentally bought a Mega Millions ticket for that night’s drawing and ended up with a $100,000 win. After mandatory federal and state taxes, she will take home more than $73,000.
According to FOX8, she meant to buy a Powerball ticket but unintentionally selected Mega Millions at the register instead. Her ticket matched four of the white balls plus the Mega Ball, and the drawing's 10X multiplier boosted what would normally be a $10,000 prize up to $100,000.
Where the ticket was bought
The winning ticket was purchased at Cap & Corks on Detroit Avenue in Lakewood. The shop's website lists the Detroit Avenue location and notes that it sells wine, beer and lottery plays.
Payout and reported plans
Per FOX8, after mandatory federal and state withholdings, the winner expects to pocket just over $73,000. She told the station she plans to give some of the money to her grandchildren, pay off her car and save the rest.
Small mistake, big surprise
Her win is a reminder that a quick mix-up at the counter can flip the script on an “unlucky” date. For local lottery players, it is another nudge to always check those tickets carefully, because even an unintended play can end up being the one that hits.
