Sheridan Boulevard turned into a weekend headache in Westminster again, as the city shut down part of the busy corridor Sunday so crews could tackle yet another water main break. It was the second weekend in a row that the same stretch of road failed, grinding traffic into a slow crawl and sending drivers onto detours while workers dug into the asphalt to stop the leak and patch the line.
According to CBS News Colorado, repair crews were back out Sunday to fix the damaged main and get lanes reopened after last weekend's break. The outlet's video showed workers on site and traffic control flagging vehicles around the construction zone.
Why the breaks keep happening
Denver Water started a Sheridan Boulevard pipe replacement project in January 2026, aiming to swap out nearly 8,000 linear feet of aging pipe between West 13th and West 29th avenues. The utility says the work is designed to cut down on future main breaks along the corridor. According to Denver Water, crews are generally scheduled at night to limit daytime disruption, and the larger project is expected to wrap up by early 2027. The agency's FAQ notes that replacing corroded mains should boost hydrant flows and improve delivery reliability for customers in the area.
Westminster projects and detours
The City of Westminster has its own slate of waterline replacement projects underway and is moving forward with a new drinking water facility. City public works information states that, in emergencies, urgent repairs may temporarily pause planned work. Neighbors near the construction zones are warned to expect flaggers, short-term closures and occasional brief water shut-offs while crews connect new mains and finish repairs, according to the City of Westminster.
What residents should expect
Denver Water's project FAQ cautions that pipeline construction can bring planned water outages and nightly lane closures. The utility stresses that the tradeoff is fewer emergency call-outs and a more dependable system once the work is finished. Denver Water urges customers and nearby businesses to sign up for project updates and says crews will refill trenches and reopen travel lanes each morning when conditions allow.
Anyone who spots flooding or a possible water leak is asked to contact the City of Westminster Public Works through its project pages or by calling the water and sewer line at 303-658-2500. Denver Water's after-hours emergency number is 303-628-6801. Both agencies say they plan to notify affected customers ahead of any scheduled shutdowns and will work to restore water service and traffic flow as quickly as safety allows.
