An alligator wandering onto the grounds of Snively Elementary in Winter Haven briefly turned yesterday into a classic Central Florida moment, but officials say the encounter ended quietly when the reptile left school property and headed back to a nearby canal with no further incident.
District Shared Photo On Social Media
Polk County Schools posted a photo of the visitor on its social media accounts and later described the situation as resolved once the gator returned to the water, according to Tampa Bay 28. The image sparked plenty of attention from nearby residents, but the district stressed that students were never in danger.
When To Call Wildlife Officials
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission urges anyone who believes an alligator is a threat to people, pets, or property to call the toll-free Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286). Contracted nuisance trappers are then sent out to handle problem animals, per the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The agency also cautions residents not to feed or approach alligators and to keep pets away from the water.
Alligators Are Part Of The Local Landscape
Snively Elementary sits in a lake-heavy corner of Winter Haven and traces its history to the shores of Grassy Lake, according to the school’s website. With canals and lakes close by, the occasional gator sighting is simply part of life in Polk County, and officials say basic common sense, such as keeping children and pets back from the water’s edge, is the best first line of defense, per the school site.
District officials reported no injuries or classroom disruptions tied to the sighting and called for calm while wildlife professionals address such situations. Parents with lingering concerns were advised to reach out to the school district directly or contact the FWC hotline.
