Fire crews rushed into action Friday at a high-rise apartment building in south St. Louis after flames erupted on the seventh floor, according to officials and witnesses. Residents were hustled out of the building as multiple engine and ladder companies swarmed the scene just off Tower Grove Park, working to keep the fire from getting a foothold in the upper floors.
As reported by FOX2, the St. Louis Fire Department said the blaze started on the seventh floor of a building in the 2700 block of South Grand Boulevard, where crews focused on evacuating residents while attacking the flames. Firefighters remained on scene to stop the fire from spreading into neighboring units.
What the department says about the response
The City of St. Louis Fire Department notes that its network of engine houses, along with specialized ladder and rescue companies, is designed for complex incidents like high-rise fires. These units handle evacuations, search and rescue, and ventilation duties while incident commanders concentrate on pinning down and isolating the heart of the blaze.
Another busy week for crews
The South Grand call capped an already taxing stretch for city firefighters. Earlier in the week, crews battled a stubborn fire on Page Boulevard that triggered lane closures and water-main problems, according to vacant Page Boulevard inferno. That incident added to what officials described as a heavy workload for the department.
Officials had not immediately reported any injuries or identified an official cause of the South Grand fire. FOX2 reported that investigators were expected to examine the scene once it was fully secured. Authorities closed affected blocks along South Grand while operations continued and urged residents to avoid the area until crews cleared the scene.
