A suspected hit-and-run driver in South Sacramento did not get far, police say. The man, believed to be involved in a felony hit-and-run, was found injured after sprinting through a neighborhood, with officers later locating him near 49th Street and Perry Avenue as first responders and neighbors converged on the block. While canvassing the area, responding officers reported hearing what sounded like gunshots. The suspect was briefly taken into custody, then released so he could undergo surgery and other medical treatment.
Detectives told ABC10 that the man’s injuries came when he ran into a fence while trying to escape, adding that the entire episode started with a felony hit-and-run. Authorities have not released the suspect’s name or shared any additional details about the vehicle involved.
South Sacramento has seen several dangerous crashes in recent months, keeping traffic safety at the top of neighborhood worries. Earlier this year, Hoodline reported on a separate South Sacramento hit-and-run that left a woman clinging to life, highlighting persistent collision problems along mid-South corridors and renewing calls for tougher enforcement and safer street design.
Investigators Continue Two Probes
Police say they are now working two active investigations: the felony hit-and-run case and a separate probe into the reported gunfire near the scene. Detectives are trying to determine whether the shots and the crash are connected. Officers have collected evidence and knocked on doors in the area to find witnesses, but have not said whether anyone else was hurt.
According to ABC10, investigators are urging anyone with video or other information from the neighborhood to contact police.
Possible Charges
Under California law, leaving the scene of a crash that causes injury can be filed as a felony under Vehicle Code section 20001. The statute, published by the California Legislature, allows for state prison terms and significant fines.
If prosecutors determine the collision caused permanent or serious injury, additional prison-time enhancements are available and the potential penalties increase sharply.
Sacramento police have not released the suspect’s identity. This article will be updated as authorities provide more information.
