A man in his late 30s was killed Friday evening after his motorcycle collided with a car at the intersection of Hoefgen Avenue and Florida Street on San Antonio’s South Side, turning a routine drive into a deadly scene. Emergency crews shut down the intersection as investigators worked under flashing lights, while neighbors and passing motorists watched police and fire units block off lanes for the response.
San Antonio police told KENS 5 that officers were dispatched to the collision at about 6:39 p.m., and the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 7 p.m. According to police, a woman driving westbound on Florida Street and a man riding southbound on Hoefgen Avenue were involved in the crash. The woman told officers she believed the intersection was clear when she proceeded. Investigators stayed at the scene Friday night to work through the details and determine who was at fault.
Intersections Are Especially Dangerous For Riders
State traffic data highlight just how risky intersections can be for motorcyclists. The Texas Department of Transportation reports that 40% of motorcycle fatalities in 2024 happened in intersections or intersection-related areas, and that 581 riders died statewide that year. TxDOT's "Look Twice" campaign urges drivers to check blind spots and yield to motorcycles before turning; more details are available from TxDOT.
Investigation Ongoing
SAPD crash investigators continued gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses Friday night and asked anyone with information or video to contact the department, KENS 5 reported. Police said the investigation remains active and did not announce any immediate charges.
