Southtown is about to get a new two-room neighborhood bar this spring. Over Under, the first joint venture from longtime local bartenders Kristofer Torres and Michael McKinney, is headed for 415 E. Cevallos St., promising a laid-back front lounge and a back bar geared toward big-screen viewing and dart-league nights. The owners say the drink list will open with classic cocktails, then expand to house creations, with prices running the gamut from budget-friendly pours to high-end tequila and mezcal, as per Axios San Antonio.
The project first hit local radars as part of a fresh wave of openings reshaping San Antonio's restaurant and bar scene, as reported by Axios San Antonio. That piece listed Over Under among the notable new arrivals and noted that both owners cut their teeth behind the stick at well-loved city spots. Axios described the concept as a hybrid, meant to be casual enough for regulars but polished enough for date night, with the team aiming to tap into Southtown's growing nightlife pull.
Inside Over Under
Over Under will occupy roughly 3,000 square feet on the ground floor of the three-story Fiesta on Cevallos building. The layout splits into two sizable bar areas connected by an arched hallway, with the rear bar set to feature a nearly 70-square-foot video wall and dart boards for league play, according to the San Antonio Express-News. Torres and McKinney say the front room is designed as a softer, lounge-style hangout, while the back room is tailored for watching big games.
"There's no really good bar to come and have a solid cocktail without spending an arm and a leg," Torres told the paper. To back that up, the owners plan to start with the classics, then roll out a lineup of house cocktails as staff training ramps up.
Where it sits in Southtown
Over Under will land on a busy stretch of Cevallos Street that already includes La Tuna Icehouse, Casa Hernán and Leche de Tigre, and it sits across from Dos Sirenos Brewing. The property, known as Fiesta on Cevallos, is a three-story infill project completed in 2022 with a rooftop terrace and second-floor balcony, according to a LoopNet listing. That listing highlights the ground-floor restaurant space as a fit for neighborhood operators like Over Under.
From the owners
Both partners bring long service-industry resumes that shaped their approach to the bar. Axios San Antonio reports that Torres and McKinney have worked at Blue Box and Francis Bogside and are aiming squarely for a service-forward neighborhood spot. For McKinney, the project is a hometown stake. "It has been a dream of mine to put a contribution into the city I grew up in," he told Axios. The duo expects Over Under to draw in nearby residents along with visitors looking for a stylish but unpretentious night out.
When to expect it
The team has not locked in a hard opening date, but the owners told the Express-News they are targeting an April 3 soft opening. They plan to share final details on their Instagram account, @overunder_satx, so prospective regulars will want to keep an eye there for the official opening announcement and booking information once it is live.
