A Marion County grand jury has indicted 19-year-old Izaha Gabriel Silva on multiple charges, including second-degree assault, in connection with a late-night shooting just off downtown Salem that left a 24-year-old man wounded in the shoulder.
Detectives with the Salem Police Department’s violent crimes unit have been working the case since the incident, and Silva is currently being held at the Marion County Jail as prosecutors move the case into the court system.
According to a media release from the Salem Police Department, officers were called to the 1200 block of State Street at about 11:40 p.m. on Feb. 4. When they arrived, they found the shooting scene and collected evidence, but the suspect was already gone.
Later that night, a separate traffic stop led Oregon State Police to arrest a person on suspicion of DUII, and a handgun was recovered from the vehicle. Detectives ultimately identified Silva as the suspect in the State Street shooting and presented the case to a Marion County grand jury, which returned the indictment on Thursday.
Keizer Search Warrant Yields Evidence
Salem police say the case picked up steam on Feb. 25, when SWAT served a search warrant at a residence in the 2000 block of Aldine Way NE in Keizer. Investigators there recovered evidence they say is tied to the State Street shooting.
The Salem Police Department reports that Silva was taken into custody at the Aldine Way address without incident and booked into the Marion County Jail. Police say the investigation remains active.
Charges And What Comes Next
An indictment is a formal accusation by a grand jury, not a finding of guilt. Silva’s case will move next to arraignment and pretrial proceedings in Marion County Circuit Court.
Officials say the Marion County District Attorney’s Office will handle the prosecution and have asked that additional questions be directed to the Marion County District Attorney's Office. Salem police note that their investigation into the shooting is still ongoing.
