CapMetro is stretching its late-night muscles for SXSW, rolling out longer train and bus hours plus new payment options to help Austinites and visitors get around without a car. With the festival set for March 12–18, the transit tweaks are squarely aimed at cutting downtown traffic during the busiest nights. Riders can bank on later northbound trains on weekends, boosted rapid-bus and Night Owl service, and a contactless tap-to-pay option with a low daily cap.

Extended trains, rapid routes and Night Owl

During SXSW, CapMetro will push rail service later into the night, keeping trains running until about 12:30 a.m. on weekdays and into the early morning on weekends, with the last northbound trains scheduled around 2:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Rapid routes 800, 801, 803, and 837 are also slated for extended hours, and Night Owl buses will roll from around midnight into the 3 a.m. hour, with downtown boarding at 6th and Congress, according to CapMetro.

How fares and tap to pay work

CapMetro’s tap-to-pay option lets riders hop on by using a contactless card, phone, or watch, and the system automatically caps fares so riders are not charged more than $2.50 in a service day after two paid rides. All major credit and debit cards are accepted except American Express. Those who prefer to plan ahead can still buy fares in the Umo app and map out trips with the Transit app, as reported by FOX 7 Austin.

Airport connections and bikeshare

Travelers landing at Austin-Bergstrom can grab Route 20 at the neon guitar bus stop on the lower level outside baggage claim for a direct shot into downtown, and CapMetro’s Night Owl Route 485 is set up to catch late-night flights. More than 80 bikeshare stations across downtown and nearby neighborhoods are available for those last-mile hops between venues. Full details are available from CapMetro.

Safety, planning and what to expect

Riders should plan for crowds and lean on real-time trip-planning tools like the Transit app to time their moves between showcases and venues. FOX 7 Austin reports that CapMetro Transit Police will increase their presence around busy hubs such as Republic Square and Downtown Station during the festival. SXSW runs March 12–18, 2026, so expect packed streets and limited parking near downtown venues, and check schedules before heading out via SXSW.
