A 25-year-old Tampa man died early Tuesday after his pickup slammed into the back of a box truck on northbound I-75, flipped several times and tossed him into oncoming traffic. Troopers say the crash unfolded around 6 a.m. on March 3 when the Dodge 1500 hit the rear of a Chevy box truck, rolled repeatedly and ejected the driver into the center lanes, where he was struck by a northbound tractor-trailer and pronounced dead at the scene.
State troopers outlined the initial sequence of events to the Tampa Free Press, which reported that the box truck was driven by a 35-year-old Valrico man and the tractor-trailer by a 50-year-old Riverview man. The impact pushed the box truck onto the highway shoulder, while the Dodge rolled multiple times, according to the report. No additional injuries were reported among the other drivers, and troopers are continuing to investigate what triggered the initial collision.
