Wednesday afternoon turned tense on Gillette Road in Pomona as L.A. County Fire crews launched a confined-space rescue after reports that a person was trapped in the 1800 block of Gillette Rd. Firefighters arrived at about 1:15 p.m. and stayed on scene while rescuers worked to free the individual and secure the area.
The L.A. County Fire Department sounded the alarm on X, noting that crews were "actively working the incident" in the 1800 block of Gillette Road and naming FS187 among the responding units, according to the L.A. County Fire Department. The brief update did not include any information about the trapped person's condition.
Why confined-space rescues are complex
Confined-space calls can turn dangerous in a hurry. Incidents involving shafts, vaults, or narrow utility openings often come with tight access, potentially hazardous air, and the risk of collapse, which means responders typically rely on rope systems, shoring, and air-monitoring equipment. Past operations in L.A. County show that the department leans on Urban Search and Rescue–trained crews and specialized support when a rescue turns highly technical, according to Fire Engineering.
Local response and station coverage
Pomona is served in part by Los Angeles County Fire Station 187, which appears in the city’s fire department directory. For major technical rescues, county engines and rescue squads are typically staged from nearby county facilities. The directory lists Station 187 along with non-emergency contact information for county fire services in Pomona, which the public can use for follow-up questions once scenes like Wednesday’s are cleared, per the City of Pomona.
What officials have said so far
Officials have not yet released details about the trapped person's condition or confirmed whether the rescue was completed. The initial alert simply stated that crews were on scene and actively working the incident, according to the L.A. County Fire Department. More information may surface if the county or city issues formal updates or when emergency logs become available.
