A weekend disturbance at a Tukwila retail spot turned into a long night for officers and one local teenager, who police say ended up in custody three separate times before the evening was over.
Tukwila police said officers first responded to reports that several young males were damaging property at a retail location. When they arrived, officers detained an adult male and a juvenile. The adult was later found with a pistol and what officers described as a substance appearing to be narcotics, and he was booked into jail on firearm and narcotics charges, according to police.
The juvenile, officers said, was initially transported to his mother's home in Renton. About 30 minutes later, he returned to the scene and was detained again, then taken into custody a third time that same night.
What police say happened
According to a Facebook update from Tukwila Police, officers were called out to a disturbance involving about six males who were reportedly damaging property. On arrival, they detained an adult and a juvenile.
Police said the adult was booked on firearm and narcotics charges after officers located a pistol and a substance consistent with narcotics. Others in the group became aggressive during the detention, prompting what officers described as a priority response from additional units.
In the same update, police said that after the juvenile was detained for a third time that evening, juvenile detention officials declined to accept him for booking because of the nature of the alleged crimes. Officers instead trespassed the youth from the retail site and provided transportation toward transit so he could get back home to Renton.
Why booking can be declined
Washington law limits when a juvenile can be held in detention, generally requiring probable cause plus additional factors such as a threat to community safety or a likelihood the juvenile will fail to appear in court, according to the Washington State Legislature. Those legal limits, combined with local booking practices, can result in detention centers declining custody in some cases, leaving officers to pursue options like returning youths to guardians or issuing trespass notices.
Where this fits locally
Police say the incident is one of several recent enforcement actions in Tukwila as the department has stepped up patrols in neighborhood hotspots this month. For example, KIRO 7 reported earlier in February that officers arrested seven people for allegedly using drugs openly in a park near Southcenter. In recent weeks, local posts from Tukwila police and neighboring agencies have repeatedly urged residents to share video or tips when they see criminal activity.
What happens next
Tukwila police said the adult suspect was booked on firearm and narcotics charges. The juvenile's case could be referred to juvenile court or to prosecutors, depending on evidence and follow-up.
Anyone with information or video connected to the incident is asked to contact the Tukwila Police Department. Full contact details and reporting options are available on the department's website.
