A long-running undercover drug investigation that Memphis police quietly labeled Operation HUSH has now exploded into public view, with officials announcing that 45 people have been indicted after what they say was a sweeping hit on street-level narcotics activity across the city.
According to a press release from the Memphis Police Department, officers in the Organized Crime Unit’s Undercover Operations Unit worked the case from January 2023 through June 2025. Investigators presented probable cause to a Shelby County grand jury on March 5, and the department says the probe ultimately generated 367 chargeable offenses. In the release, MPD said that through long-term investigations and undercover operations, it aims to keep identifying and disrupting illegal drug activity in Memphis neighborhoods.
As reported by FOX13 Memphis, the indictments include charges for the manufacture, delivery, or sale of controlled substances, specifically crack cocaine, powder cocaine, fentanyl, and various pills. MPD also said some of the people named in the indictments are convicted felons accused of illegally possessing firearms. The department reported that its Organized Crime Unit tracked down and arrested 19 of the indicted individuals on March 11 and seized multiple vehicles in the process.
Charges, Gang Ties and Seizures
In its summary of the case, the Memphis Police Department said 19 of the 45 people indicted are documented gang members. Street crews listed in the investigation include the Bloods, Crips, Vice Lords, and Gangster Disciples. The youngest defendant is 22 years old, and the oldest is 64, underscoring that this was not just a case focused on teenagers or first-timers. Officers also reported seizing 19 vehicles that they say were used to transport illegal drugs, and the department released a list of 19 people arrested as part of Operation HUSH.
What Happens Next
With indictments now in hand, all of the defendants are headed for prosecution in Shelby County courts and will be scheduled for arraignment. MPD did not include any details about the bond in its release. Local coverage has noted that the charges range from lower-level drug sales to more serious manufacturing and distribution counts, which means potential penalties will depend heavily on the specific charges and any eventual convictions. FOX13 Memphis reported that prosecutors will handle the cases in Shelby County as the criminal process unfolds.
MPD has framed Operation HUSH as part of a broader, long-term push to identify and dismantle drug networks in Memphis, and investigators say their work will continue as these cases move through the courts. City residents, defense attorneys, and prosecutors are expected to watch the arraignments and early hearings closely as the 45 indictments start to work their way through the system.
