A major weekend closure at the Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange on San Antonio's Northwest Side is set to start Friday, March 20 at 9 p.m., and it could make things rough for anyone trying to get around that busy stretch. TxDOT plans to keep several ramps and frontage-road segments shut through the weekend, with crews aiming to reopen everything before the Monday morning commute at 5 a.m. on March 23.
What Is Closing And Where Traffic Is Going
According to MySA, TxDOT's release says drivers can expect the following closures at the Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange during the weekend work:
- Eastbound Loop 1604 exit to Chase Hill Boulevard
- Eastbound Loop 1604 frontage road at the I-10 interchange
- Westbound Loop 1604 entrance ramp from the I-10 interchange
- Westbound I-10 frontage road at the interchange
The official detours, as outlined in the same MySA report, go like this:
- Drivers headed to Chase Hill Boulevard should use the Babcock Road exit, then continue on the eastbound frontage road.
- Eastbound Loop 1604 frontage-road traffic should enter the I-10 eastbound frontage road, use the UTSA Boulevard U-turn to cross to the westbound frontage road, then re-enter Loop 1604 westbound.
- Vehicles on the westbound frontage road trying to reach the main lanes can take the La Cantera Parkway bypass ramp and re-enter Loop 1604 after Babcock Road.
Why TxDOT Is Shutting It Down
The weekend closure is part of the larger Loop 1604 North Expansion project and is needed so crews can work on bridge connections and new flyover ramps, according to TxDOT. Segment 2 of the project, which includes the I-10 interchange, remains under construction as TxDOT builds a five-level stack along with collector-distributor roads.
TxDOT's traffic information notes that "all closures are subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances," as listed on the TxDOT traffic page. Translation for drivers: plans can shift on short notice, and you should be ready for last-minute adjustments, signage and flaggers in the area.
How To Dodge Delays This Weekend
Drivers should expect heavier-than-normal detours around the Northwest Side and build in extra time if travel near La Cantera, UTSA or the Stone Oak area is unavoidable. Coverage of earlier weekend shutdowns has shown similar traffic patterns and pointed to Lockhill-Selma, Vance Jackson and La Cantera corridors as solid alternates; see KSAT for past examples.
For real-time traffic conditions, check 511 Texas and local construction updates before you head out. The closures are scheduled only for as long as needed and are slated to wrap before the Monday commute, weather permitting.
