Legal consequences
Maryland law requires drivers involved in crashes that cause bodily injury to stop at the scene, help anyone who is hurt, and exchange information with the other parties. Leaving the scene instead can turn a bad situation into a criminal case.
As outlined by the Maryland Attorney General’s Office and explained in legal summaries of Transportation Article §20‑102 by Maryland criminal law resources, failing to remain at the scene of a crash that causes injury can bring substantial penalties under state law.
Why North Avenue matters
North Avenue is a major east-west corridor through Baltimore and has been the focus of a series of safety and transit upgrades in recent years. That includes the North Avenue Rising project, which added dedicated bus lanes and pedestrian improvements along the route.
The Maryland Transit Administration has highlighted those investments as part of broader efforts to improve transit reliability and pedestrian safety on the corridor, according to the Maryland Transit Administration.
Update
Western District officers remain on the scene and have not released additional details about the victims’ conditions or the suspect’s identity. This story will be updated if officials provide more information.
