A July Fourth gathering at a Westport home took a disturbing turn when guests drinking from a shared water container allegedly wound up ingesting a tainted mix that sent two people to the hospital, according to police. Now, a New York woman is jailed on a $1.01 million bond as investigators work to unravel what they say happened inside the coastal Connecticut home.
Westport police say they secured an arrest warrant last month for 50-year-old Megan Greenlee of Pleasantville, N.Y., after identifying her as the suspect in the suspected poisoning. According to authorities, Greenlee did not turn herself in, and the Westchester County Police warrant and fugitive unit ultimately arrested her. She was extradited to Connecticut on Feb. 25, where a judge ordered her held on $1.01 million bond.
Greenlee is facing two counts of second-degree assault and two counts of assault of an elderly person. Police say she was also charged after allegedly refusing to be fingerprinted, and an additional $10,000 was tacked onto her bond due to an outstanding failure-to-appear warrant, according to Daily Voice.
What Police Say Happened To The Water
Investigators say they found a communal water container at the residence with an unknown sediment at the bottom and seized it as evidence. A sample was sent to the Connecticut State Forensic Science Laboratory for testing.
Lab results came back positive for a medication that investigators say was linked to Greenlee, according to police. Two people who had consumed the water were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment and later recovered, authorities said.
What Comes Next In Court
Greenlee remains in custody while prosecutors review the case file and weigh formal court filings based on the evidence gathered so far. Westport police say the investigation is active and ongoing and that more details will be released as they are able to share them. Initial reporting on the arrest and bond was published by Daily Voice.
Community On Edge As Probe Continues
Police have not publicly discussed a motive and have not said why the communal water may have been targeted. Because the allegations involve a shared drinking source and elderly victims, authorities say they are treating the incident as a serious assault case.
Westport police are urging residents to stay alert while the investigation plays out and are asking anyone with relevant information to contact the Westport Police Department.
