A late-night collision at Yakima Avenue and South 23rd Street in Tacoma has left one person dead and a 22-year-old driver under arrest on suspicion of serious felony charges. Police say two vehicles crashed at the intersection around 8:06 p.m. Tuesday. Tacoma Police Department spokeswoman Shelbie Boyd said a driver hit another vehicle on South 23rd Street. According to The News Tribune, the person in the struck vehicle was rushed to a hospital in critical condition and was pronounced dead Wednesday morning. Investigators stayed at the scene into the night to document the wreck.
Jail records show a 22-year-old was booked on suspicion of vehicular homicide and driving while intoxicated after the crash, according to a syndicated republication of the Tribune report. Authorities have not released the suspect's name, and detectives say the investigation is still active as they gather evidence and interview witnesses.
How Washington Law Treats Vehicular Deaths
Under Washington law, vehicular homicide applies when a death "ensues within three years as a proximate result" of a driver being intoxicated, driving recklessly, or driving with disregard for the safety of others. The offense is classified as a Class A felony, with enhanced penalties when a DUI-related collision results in a death, according to the Revised Code of Washington.
What Comes Next
After an arrest like this, the case is handed to prosecutors, who decide whether to file formal charges. An arrest is not the same thing as a conviction. Charging decisions usually turn on evidence such as toxicology reports, witness accounts, and crash reconstruction, and state prosecuting offices provide guidance on handling felony traffic cases through the Washington Association of Prosecuting Attorneys.
Anyone who saw the crash or has information that might help the investigation is asked to contact the Tacoma Police Department non-emergency line at (253) 287-4455 or reach out to TPD Media Relations.
