Boston police say they cut short a package theft spree in Back Bay on Tuesday, arresting a Weymouth man who allegedly tailed a UPS truck and scooped up deliveries almost as soon as they hit the doorstep.
Officers responding to a larceny-in-progress call at 369 Beacon Street found the kind of scene city residents dread: multiple torn-open packages and bags scattered around the building. According to police, the suspect had followed the UPS driver and grabbed parcels as they were dropped at doorways. At least one package was recovered and returned to its owner.
According to the Boston Police Department (Official), District D-4 officers were dispatched to 369 Beacon Street after the larceny report came in and a suspect description was broadcast to responding units. Officers then located multiple open packages and bags near the scene that appeared to have been rifled through.
Package Thefts Remain A Persistent Problem
Package and porch-pirate thefts have surged in recent years, prompting many residents to install cameras and switch to secure delivery options. The Boston Globe reported that SafeWise ranked Boston among the worst metro areas in the country for package theft, estimating roughly 144 million dollars in losses in 2023. The report noted that police urge residents to report thefts so investigators can connect related incidents.
Arrest, Charges And Arraignment
Officers tracked the suspect to the rear of Beacon Street at 412 Back Street and placed him under arrest. The department identified the arrestee as 33-year-old Jose Denier of Weymouth. He was charged with larceny theft from a building and is expected to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court, according to the Boston Police Department (Official).
Police Ask For Tips As Investigations Continue
Investigators are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact Boston police, noting that recovered goods can play a key role in building cases. In a 2025 release, the Boston Police Department described how officers recovered a stolen college diploma during a package-theft arrest and again urged residents to file reports when packages go missing.
Legal Note
Denier faces a charge of larceny theft from a building and is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court. His upcoming arraignment in Boston Municipal Court will determine the next procedural steps for prosecutors. Anyone who has video or additional information tied to Tuesday's incident is asked to contact Boston police.
