A Cary man is now the third person behind bars in connection with a 2025 shooting at the Cary Pines Apartments that left a man fighting for his life. Billy James Adell Jr. has been indicted on one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and is being held at the Wake County Detention Center. He was scheduled for his first court appearance on April 8, 2026.
Indictment and court schedule
According to CBS17, a Wake County grand jury indicted Adell in March on the assault charge, and authorities took him into custody on April 7. Warrants reviewed by the outlet list the charges prosecutors plan to pursue and show all three suspects in the case are scheduled for arraignment on April 27 at the Wake County Justice Center. CBS17 also reports that Adell was set for a first court appearance on April 8, 2026, and that he remains booked at the county facility while the case moves forward.
What happened at Bargate Drive
The shooting unfolded shortly after 12:15 p.m. on Sept. 27, 2025, on the 300 block of Bargate Drive at the Cary Pines Apartments, where officers found an adult man suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, according to ABC11. Police at the time described the scene as an active investigation, with detectives working to piece together what led to gunfire in the middle of the day at the apartment complex.
Other arrests in the investigation
Two other suspects were already in custody before Adell’s arrest. As reported by WRAL, 20-year-old Omunique Anna‑Nickole Hogan was arrested in October 2025 and was being held at the Wake County Detention Center. Warrants reviewed by CBS17 also list an arrest for Jaylen Brown in connection with the Bargate Drive shooting. Cary police, working with partner agencies, say the investigation remains active as prosecutors line up their next moves.
What’s next
All three suspects remain in custody while the case heads toward the scheduled April 27 arraignment at the Wake County Justice Center. Prosecutors are expected to formally present the charges in open court, and defense attorneys will begin mapping out their strategy. Investigators are still asking anyone with information about the Sept. 27 shooting to contact the Cary Police Department or Crime Stoppers.
Legal note
An indictment means a grand jury has found probable cause to charge a defendant, and the case proceeds to arraignment, where pleas are entered and pretrial schedules are set. The assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury charge is a felony, and over the coming weeks lawyers on both sides will address bail, discovery, and other pretrial issues as the case winds its way through Wake County court.
