A Bethalto woman at the center of a brutal child sex abuse case in Metro East has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after entering guilty pleas to two felony charges.

Ashley Rusk, 34, of Bethalto pleaded guilty to one count of predatory criminal sexual abuse and one count of permitting the sexual abuse of a child. A Madison County judge handed down the 40-year sentence Tuesday during a hearing in Edwardsville, closing out her part of a case that has rattled the small community.

According to First Alert 4, Rusk admitted performing sexual acts against a child under 13 in September 2023 and allowing her boyfriend to sexually abuse the same child in February 2025. The outlet also reports that her alleged accomplice, 36-year-old Blake Clemons, is being held at the Madison County Jail as he awaits trial.

Investigation and earlier charges

The case did not start with a local traffic stop or a neighborhood tip. According to the Journal-Courier, the investigation began after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children sent a cybertip to the Illinois attorney general's office, which then forwarded it to local detectives.

Investigators obtained search warrants for KIK, Yahoo, Snapchat and Charter accounts and, according to that reporting, traced more than 30 videos shared over the KIK messaging app to a home in the 500 block of Sheridan Street in Bethalto. A Feb. 28, 2025 search warrant at that address led to the arrests and the seizure of evidence that now underpins the criminal case, court filings show.

Co-defendant and charges

While Rusk has been sentenced, Clemons is still facing a long list of charges and remains in custody awaiting trial. RiverBender reported that he was originally charged with 16 counts, including 11 counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, along with multiple child pornography charges.

Court documents cited in that coverage allege the abuse began in 2022 and continued into early 2025, with several incidents recorded and shared electronically.

Legal notes

Rusk's 40-year sentence stems from the two counts to which she pleaded guilty, as previously outlined by First Alert 4. Earlier indictments had listed additional accusations, according to prior reporting from the Journal-Courier, although those did not all factor into Tuesday's sentencing.

Illinois law treats predatory sexual offenses against young children as among the most serious felonies, and sentencing can be stiff, especially when the conduct is repeated and the victim is under 13. In Rusk's case, the lengthy term effectively locks in the state's view of the severity of the crimes, while Clemons' charges continue to work their way through Madison County Circuit Court.

The sentence closes one chapter of a case that has put a tight-knit corner of Metro East under an unwelcome spotlight, while court dockets track Clemons' upcoming hearings and filings as the prosecution moves ahead.
