A pre-dawn drive along a quiet stretch of Blanton Road in northern Pasco County turned deadly early Monday when an SUV veered off the roadway and erupted in flames, killing the driver at the scene.
First responders rushed to the crash site near Parrish Grove Road and arrived to find a Toyota SUV fully engulfed, according to troopers. The lone occupant, an unidentified adult man, was pronounced dead at the scene while crews worked to extinguish the fire and secure the area. The collision shut down the roadway for an extended period as investigators documented the wreckage.
Speaking to the Tampa Free Press, the Florida Highway Patrol said the crash happened at about 4:49 a.m. as the man drove a Toyota RAV4 north on Blanton Road. Troopers said he failed to negotiate a curve just south of Parrish Grove Road, drifted onto the shoulder, plowed through a fence and then hit two trees. The impact sparked a violent fire that quickly consumed the vehicle. The Florida Highway Patrol is handling the on-scene investigation, according to the report.
Where it happened
Blanton Road and nearby county routes cut through a semi-rural part of northern Pasco, a mix of curves and long straightaways where higher speeds can turn a single mistake into a serious run-off-road crash. For context, Bay News 9 previously reported a major overturned semi incident near the Blanton Road exit on I-75 in May 2025 that shut down southbound lanes for hours, highlighting ongoing safety concerns on key routes in the area.
Investigation and records
Troopers have not released the victim’s name, citing the need to confirm his identity and notify his family, the Florida Highway Patrol told the Tampa Free Press. Investigators have not yet indicated whether speed, impairment or a possible mechanical issue played a role in the wreck.
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles notes that official crash reports can take up to 10 days to appear in the FLHSMV Crash Portal, where members of the public can request records or look for additional details once they are released.
