Bojangles has its sights set on Converse for what would be the chicken chain’s first outpost in the suburb, the latest move in a fast-running push to grow its San Antonio-area footprint. The Charlotte-born brand has been planting flags around the city and leaning hard on a streamlined menu that franchise documents and industry trackers say is driving strong per-store sales. If the Converse plan moves ahead, it would push the chain farther east of San Antonio and follow recent Bojangles openings on the Southwest Side.
Bojangles Is Eyeing Converse
As reported by the San Antonio Business Journal, the chain has identified Converse as a target for a future location in the Bexar County suburb. The outlet notes the move is part of a larger Texas strategy that could bring roughly 45 to 50 restaurants statewide. The reporting does not include a firm opening date for the potential Converse site.
Boneless Menu And Store Economics
Bojangles has doubled down on a boneless-focused menu and a simplified kitchen layout designed to speed service and reduce operating headaches. According to Airport Experience, which cites the brand’s Franchise Disclosure Document, eleven full-size restaurants using the boneless-only format averaged about $2.53 million in gross sales in fiscal 2024. Franchise materials point to those numbers as a key reason Texas markets look so attractive, and the unit economics are central to the company’s pitch to franchisees building out the Lone Star State.
Recent Openings In San Antonio
The chain has already started its Alamo City rollout. A new Bojangles at 3003 SW Military Drive opened this spring after the brand’s first local restaurant on Potranco Road. The San Antonio Express-News reports the Military Drive store comes in at roughly 2,655 square feet with 57 seats and hosted promotional giveaways around opening day. Together, the new San Antonio stores are part of a broader Texas push that includes expansion into Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston.
What This Could Mean For Converse
For Converse, a Bojangles would add another national brand to a growing retail corridor on the city’s east side and would likely bring both construction and restaurant jobs. Coverage of the chain’s Texas rollout has highlighted a roughly 50-store ambition across major metros, and local outlets have noted that the simplified format makes the concept easier to drop into freestanding and travel-lane locations. As CultureMap San Antonio observed, that playbook is a big reason franchisees are chasing fast-build sites around the region.
There is no firm public timeline yet for a Converse opening, and Bojangles and local development partners did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The San Antonio Business Journal first reported on the Converse plan, and this story will be updated as leases are signed and permits hit the public record.
