Liberty Mutual is preparing to officially retire the State Auto name in Columbus once it sells the longtime headquarters on East Broad Street, closing the book on a brand local drivers have seen around town for generations. As part of the shift, the insurer plans to move work away from the 518 East Broad Street campus and into a smaller Liberty Mutual-branded office elsewhere in the Columbus area.
What Liberty Mutual announced
According to Columbus Business First, Liberty Mutual will drop the State Auto brand after 105 years once the Broad Street property changes hands. The outlet reports that State Auto signs will come down from the campus, formally ending the company's separate brand identity in the city.
From acquisition to integration
Liberty Mutual completed its acquisition of State Auto in 2022 and has been integrating the businesses since the deal closed, according to a Liberty Mutual release. The latest move is described as the most visible sign so far that the two operations will be folded together under the Liberty Mutual banner.
New office, new name
Columbus Business First also reports that Liberty Mutual is searching for a smaller Central Ohio office to replace the Broad Street headquarters, and that any future Columbus-area location will carry the Liberty Mutual name. In other words, the company plans to keep a local footprint while phasing State Auto out as a distinct brand.
The Broad Street campus and local ties
The downtown property at 518 East Broad Street is still listed as State Auto's main office on the company's contact page. The campus is linked to nearby features such as Pein Park and the seasonal "Christmas Corner" display, which local listings identify as elements of its community presence. The site has surfaced in downtown planning conversations before, including a 2020 proposal for a surface lot and plaza behind the headquarters, per local reporting.
What to watch next
The timing of the sale, the eventual buyer and any redevelopment plans have not been publicly detailed, and the transaction is expected to draw close attention from downtown officials and nearby residents. This story will be updated as property filings, buyer announcements or additional company statements become available.
