A 35-year-old woman was assaulted on a southbound No. 5 subway train in the Bronx on April 9, suffering head injuries and triggering a police search for the person captured in surveillance photos. The incident unfolded as the train approached the East 138 Street–Grand Concourse station in Mott Haven. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries. The attacker took off on foot after the assault and has not been found.
What police say
According to the NYPD, as reported by PIX11, the confrontation started as a verbal dispute before the assailant moved in and hit the 35-year-old "multiple times in the head" with an unidentified blunt object. Investigators released surveillance images of a woman they are trying to identify, described as wearing a gray sweatshirt, dark pants and beige shoes at the time of the attack. Police said she ran off on foot and urged anyone with information, including video, to reach out.
How to submit tips
The NYPD told PIX11 that tips can be sent to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), using the online tip form, the Crime Stoppers app, or by texting 274637 (CRIMES) and entering TIP577. A Spanish-language line is available at 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). Detectives said they are combing through surveillance footage and following up on leads as they work to put a name to the face in the released images. Anyone who was on that train or recorded what happened is being asked to contact police.
Transit context
The East 138 Street–Grand Concourse station is a heavily used transfer point on Bronx routes, and incidents like this tend to rattle riders who rely on the subway every day. Police and transit staff continue to press passengers to share any footage or details they have; even brief cellphone clips can give investigators crucial clues. As of the time of the police update, no arrests had been reported in connection with the assault.
