A stolen car pinging on its owner's tracker led Burien deputies straight to a sleeping suspect late Wednesday, where they say they found a gun inside the vehicle and a convicted felon behind the wheel.
According to the Burien Police Department, deputies were tipped off by another local law enforcement agency about a stolen vehicle whose owner was actively tracking it into Burien. Following the live location data, deputies found the car, spotted a lone man slumped in the driver's seat and detained him without incident before beginning an evidence search.
Evidence, Booking And Charges
In its post, the department said deputies found a firearm inside the stolen vehicle. The man, described as a convicted felon, was booked into jail on several charges. The post also reminded residents, "If you see suspicious activity, do not approach, call 911," and noted that a subsequent search turned up narcotics along with multiple identification cards that did not belong to the suspect.
State Law And What It Means
Under Washington law, people with certain felony convictions are barred from possessing firearms and can face unlawful possession charges, with penalties that vary by case. As outlined by the Washington State Legislature in RCW 9.41.040, prosecutors weigh prior convictions when filing weapons charges. The City of Burien's police page notes that deputies coordinate with neighboring agencies to track stolen property and keep residents updated, something local officials say helps speed up recoveries.
Police Urge Prompt Reporting
Burien police are urging vehicle owners to report thefts as soon as they happen and to share any tracking information they have so investigators can move quickly on stolen property. Anyone with information or sightings related to this case is asked to call 911 rather than approach potential suspects.
