Five Canyon Lake campuses spent part of Thursday on "secure" status, with students and staff staying indoors while the school day rolled on, Comal Independent School District officials said.
The affected schools were Rebecca Creek Elementary, Startzville Elementary, Mountain Valley Elementary, Mountain Valley Middle School and Canyon Lake High School. District officials emphasized there was no emergency inside any of the campuses and that students and staff were safe, with classes and regular activities continuing inside the buildings.
Officials said updates would be shared as more information became available.
According to Fox San Antonio, the district used social media shortly before noon to spell out what "secure" status means in practice: exterior doors are locked, visitors are not allowed on campus, and students are not being released for the time being. Staff members and law enforcement monitor the area while normal instruction continues indoors. District officials did not immediately say what triggered Thursday’s move to secure status.
District safety tools and protocol
Comal ISD highlights a range of safety measures on its website, including an "Anonymous Alerts" reporting app and a dedicated Safety & Security office that coordinates responses across the district. Officials have also pointed to ongoing work with local law enforcement and the placement of School Resource Officers and other security resources on campuses in recent years.

Why families are watching
Thursday’s secure-status alerts arrived just days after a deadly incident elsewhere in the district. Last Monday, a student at Hill Country College Preparatory High School in Bulverde shot a teacher, then died of a self-inflicted wound, authorities said. Coverage of that shooting has highlighted how quickly school systems and law enforcement are expected to react to any perceived threat, and why even temporary campus security measures now land with extra weight for families and staff. Investigators are still examining the circumstances surrounding that case.
In the Canyon Lake situation, the district reiterated there was no active emergency and urged families to rely on official district channels for updates. Fox San Antonio reported that officials said they would share additional details as they become available. Parents with urgent questions were encouraged to look to district communications and local law enforcement for verified information rather than unofficial reports.
