Today, Charlotte rolled out of bed to clear blue skies and a brisk start in the low 50s, but that cool air will not stick around for long. Sunshine will take over, sending afternoon temperatures toward a toasty high near 85F with only light winds to stir the air.
Afternoon Heat, Falling Humidity, Rising Fire Risk
The NWS GreenvilleSpartanburg is calling for highs near 85F today, paired with light northwest winds and steadily dropping afternoon humidity. That dry combo will nudge fire danger close to critical levels across the Piedmont.
There is also a slight chance of a few isolated thunderstorms mainly along the I-77 corridor late this afternoon into the evening. Any showers that do pop up should be brief and deliver only minor rainfall. For now, no watches or warnings are posted for the Charlotte area, according to the National Weather Service.
Drought Background And Record Heat Threat
Today’s heat is just the latest chapter in a longer dry spell. March ran unusually warm and dry across much of North Carolina, and drought conditions have worsened in parts of the state, cutting into any short-term hope for relief.
An upper-level ridge is expected to park warmer air over the region next week, and forecasters say daily record highs could start to fall as early as Tuesday and remain at risk through the rest of the week. The broader regional setup and recent dryness are detailed by the NC State Climate Office.
Plan Ahead For A Hot, Dry Stretch
If you are heading outside, tilt your plans toward the cooler morning and early evening hours, bring plenty of water and sun protection, and skip burning yard debris while humidity stays low. With dry conditions expected through much of next week, keep checking updated forecasts for any changes and look up your county burn rules before you light anything outdoors.
