Clinton Hill’s longtime pastry haunt has officially crossed the river. Choice Brooklyn, the family‑run cafe that has anchored Lafayette Avenue since the mid‑2000s, quietly opened a second outpost on the Upper West Side, bringing its Southwestern France‑inspired baked goods to Broadway.
The new shop at 2040 Broadway and West 70th Street started serving customers last week and is set to operate daily. The opening was first teased on the cafe’s Instagram, then spotted by local watchers; Brooklyn Eagle highlighted the move as the latest chapter in the business’s long Clinton Hill story.
What They’re Serving
The Upper West Side location offers the full lineup from the original: house‑baked pastries, espresso drinks, and made‑to‑order sandwiches and paninis, with breakfast items and mains laid out on the cafe’s online menu. Choice Brooklyn lists breakfast starting at $4.95, with sandwiches and paninis priced in the mid‑teens. Hours are posted as 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, and in a bit of good news for late‑day snackers, pastries are marked half‑price after 5 p.m.
The Space’s Past Lives
The Broadway corner spot has already seen one French pastry act come and go. Before Choice Brooklyn moved in, the address housed Patisserie Chanson, which opened in 2023 and closed earlier this spring. I Love the Upper West Side reported that the patisserie previously operated at the site, while a Chanson Broadway location opening in 2023 is reflected in the company’s SEC filing.
From Clinton Hill To Broadway
Choice Brooklyn got its start as Choice Market in 2005 on the Clinton Hill–Bed‑Stuy border, building a following around recipes that the owners say trace back to a family farm in Lot‑et‑Garonne in Southwestern France. On its site, Choice Brooklyn stresses an in‑house, from‑scratch approach while keeping prices accessible, a mission the family says helped guide the decision to take the leap into Manhattan.
The new Broadway outpost plants the brand within reach of Lincoln Center and the nearby theater corridor, giving pre‑show crowds another pastry and coffee option. The original cafe at 318 Lafayette Avenue remains open, and regulars can expect the Upper West Side shop to mirror that Clinton Hill menu. Brooklyn Eagle notes that the business has been part of the Clinton Hill landscape for nearly two decades. For current hours and ordering options, the cafe’s website lists both locations along with online ordering links.
