A late-night police standoff over an alleged sneaker burglary in Collingdale ended in tragedy early Wednesday, when a house erupted in flames and a suspect inside was believed to have died. What began as a reported break-in at a vacant home turned into a multi-agency siege that left one man presumed dead and another under arrest.
The trouble started around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday on the unit block of Rhodes Avenue, after someone monitoring the vacant home on a Ring camera saw two masked, armed men break in and immediately called police as the pair moved through the property. Sources told Action News the burglars were after Air Jordan sneakers stored inside the home. SWAT teams surrounded the property, and around 2 a.m., the house caught fire after flash bangs and tear gas were deployed. One suspect is now presumed dead inside the burned structure, while the other was taken into custody.
Standoff Turned Into Fire
Firefighters and law enforcement stayed on scene well into Wednesday morning, dousing hot spots and trying to secure what was left of the house. Investigators have not yet released a full, minute-by-minute account of how the blaze unfolded, and officials are still working to determine whether police tactics, conditions inside the home, or some other factor sparked the fire.
Home's Owner Was In Custody
The house was identified as belonging to Michael Robinson, a former Radnor Middle School teacher's aide who was arrested in late February on charges that he allegedly traveled to Texas and sexually assaulted a minor, according to prior reporting. NBC10 noted Robinson was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals and is being held at George W. Hill Correctional Facility while he awaits extradition.
Local Policing Context
Collingdale has been dealing with a shortage of local officers in recent years, a staffing crunch that led the borough to bring in State Police backup in 2024. Residents and local officials have said lean staffing can make big, fast-moving incidents tougher to manage, and neighbors along Rhodes Avenue told reporters they watched the overnight drama play out from nearby sidewalks and porches.
Authorities have not publicly released the identity of the person believed to have died in the fire, nor have they detailed the specific cause. The coroner and fire investigators are expected to determine the cause and manner of death, along with how the blaze started. This story will be updated as officials release more information.
