A 20-year-old Stony Brook University student is facing serious charges after police say his dorm room doubled as a small-time drug operation. Investigators reported finding methamphetamines, ketamine and items they say were used to package and sell narcotics. The student, identified by police as William Turri, was taken into custody on campus, brought to the Sixth Precinct and held there pending arraignment. The arrest quickly prompted a university statement and a brief on-campus police review of the situation.
Suffolk County Police narcotics detectives, working with SUNY Stony Brook State University Police, searched a Mount Hall dorm room and recovered methamphetamines, ketamine and other items consistent with drug sales, according to the Suffolk County Police Department, as reported by News12. The outlet reports the bust capped a joint investigation into suspected on-campus dealing.
An AOL-syndicated report said the search took place around midday and that Turri, described as a Fairport native, was arrested at the scene. The report notes he was held overnight at the Sixth Precinct and is expected to be arraigned Tuesday in First District Court in Central Islip, according to AOL.
University Says Probe Began After Anonymous Tip
Stony Brook University said it was notified of the arrest and that the case traces back to "receipt of an anonymous Crimestoppers tip" that led to a joint investigation by campus and county authorities. The university added that it "maintains strict policies regarding illegal activity and campus safety," according to News12.
Charges And Next Steps
Police have charged Turri with multiple offenses, including criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal sale of a controlled substance and criminal use of drug paraphernalia, the AOL-syndicated report said. He is expected in First District Court in Central Islip on Tuesday for arraignment, where prosecutors will formally detail the charges and outline what comes next in the case, according to AOL.
Campus Context
Drug-related arrests in residence halls are not unheard of at Stony Brook. In 2021, university police and Suffolk County detectives arrested a student after reportedly finding fentanyl, ketamine and other substances in a dorm room, as reported by The Statesman. That case, like the latest one, highlighted ongoing collaboration between campus officers and county narcotics detectives.
Legal Context
The charges in Turri's case fall under Article 220 of the New York Penal Law, which covers criminal possession and sale of controlled substances. Penalties depend on the drug type, the amount involved and whether prosecutors allege intent to distribute. The official New York court guide to Article 220 lays out the degrees of each offense and possible sentences, which can range from misdemeanors to felony prison terms, according to NY Courts.
The case is set to move into the criminal court system at arraignment, and additional details are expected to surface through court filings and future police updates.
