Atlanta police rolled up on an illegal street-racing meet on Thursday, breaking up a smoke-filled spectacle and scattering a crowd of more than 200 people and vehicles, video shows. Officers moved in after reports of burnouts and drifting that had blocked a public roadway, and the gathering quickly dissolved once patrol units pushed into the area. There were no immediate reports of serious injuries, and traffic was reopened after officers cleared the scene.

Officers Clear the Scene

Video from WSB-TV Channel 2 shows officers forming a perimeter around the action and steering spectators and vehicles away as engines roared and smoke hung over fresh skid marks. According to the station, the crowd grew to more than 200 people, with dozens of cars clustered around the blocked roadway before police moved in. The footage captures onlookers spilling out of intersections and cars darting off as officers worked to get traffic moving again.

Part Of A Wider Crackdown

The bust is the latest in a series of street-racing and "takeover" sweeps across metro Atlanta as city and county officials ramp up penalties and coordinated operations to get a handle on the problem, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Local leaders and lawmakers have expanded penalties and ordinances, including impoundments, fines and possible jail time for organizers and spectators, after previous gatherings ended in crashes or shootings. Neighbors who live near known meetup spots say they want quicker, more visible enforcement when intersections are shut down or bystanders are put at risk.

Police: Ongoing Enforcement

The Atlanta Police Department said it will keep enforcing state laws and city ordinances and will continue working with neighboring agencies on targeted patrols and vehicle impoundments, according to a department release. APD noted that officers have been able to reopen streets quickly after similar pop-up gatherings and again urged residents to report dangerous driving to 911. Investigators also plan to review video and social media posts to identify organizers or reckless drivers for possible follow-up enforcement.
