Cranbrook Schools is giving one of its oldest campus workhorses a second life. The Bloomfield Hills institution has landed a $15 million gift to turn its former 1932 gymnasium into a modern performing arts center, a top-to-bottom redo that will swap jump balls for jazz concerts and pep rallies for plays and dance performances.
The donation will bankroll a comprehensive renovation of the historic building so it can properly host concerts, theater and dance by students and visiting artists. Instead of sitting in its original athletic layout, the onetime gym is now slated to become a flexible home for school and community performances.
