The Monday morning rush at the 46th Street-Bliss Street subway station in Sunnyside turned frightening when a man grabbed a 23-year-old woman on the sidewalk, carried her into the station, then bolted after she threatened to call the cops, according to police. The April 20 incident ended without further injury, but the suspect is still on the loose and no arrests have been made.
Investigators say the woman was walking near 46th Street and Queens Boulevard when the man picked her up and carried her down into the station. When she told him she would call police, he let her go and took off, leaving her behind as stunned commuters moved through the rush-hour crowd.
Detectives later pulled surveillance video, and police released a still image to the public as they hunt for the suspect, according to the New York Post. The outlet reports the attack unfolded near Queens Boulevard and 46th Street and that investigators are asking anyone who saw what happened, or who recognizes the man, to speak up.
What police say happened
The NYPD says the man approached the woman on the sidewalk at 46th Street and Queens Boulevard, lifted and carried her into the 46th Street-Bliss Street subway station, then released her only after she threatened to call for help. Officers say he ran eastbound along Queens Boulevard as the woman got away.
Detectives began canvassing the area, reviewing surveillance footage and talking to witnesses in the hours after the incident. They are now working to match the image of the man with any possible identity and to see if he is tied to any other nearby incidents.
Lanky suspect caught on camera
Police circulated a photo that shows a lanky man dressed head to toe in black, a detail noted by the New York Post. In the still, he appears to be wearing a black leather jacket, black pants, black sneakers and white wired headphones.
Investigators are asking anyone who recognizes the man or his outfit to contact them as they try to confirm his identity and determine whether this scare is an isolated incident or part of a pattern.
