Apple is reshuffling the org chart at the very top. The company said today that longtime hardware engineering boss John Ternus will become CEO on September 1, while Tim Cook shifts into a new role as executive chairman. Cook will remain CEO through the summer to manage the handoff. Apple’s board signed off on the plan unanimously, marking the company’s first fully planned leadership transition since Cook took the reins from Steve Jobs in 2011. The move lands during Apple’s 50th anniversary year, as the company faces growing pressure to move faster on artificial intelligence and new product categories.
In a press release on Apple Newsroom, Apple described the change as the result of a "thoughtful, long-term succession planning process" and said Cook "will assist with certain aspects of the company, including engaging with policymakers around the world." The company also confirmed that Ternus will join the board on September 1 and that Arthur Levinson will step into the role of lead independent director as part of the same transition.
What Apple Said
Cook called leading Apple "the greatest privilege of my life" in the company’s statement and backed Ternus as a leader the board can trust, according to Apple Newsroom. Ternus, for his part, said he was "profoundly grateful for this opportunity" and promised to carry Apple’s mission forward as he steps into the top job.
Who Is John Ternus?
Ternus has been with Apple since 2001, working his way through product and hardware roles before joining the executive team as senior vice president of hardware engineering in 2021, as detailed by Bloomberg. Bloomberg and other coverage note that he has become a more public face for Apple this year, taking on higher-profile product presentations and broader design oversight. Those moves helped position him as the internal favorite to follow Cook ahead of Monday’s confirmation.
Market Reaction And What’s Next
Investors did not exactly throw confetti. Apple shares slipped more than 1% in after-hours trading following the announcement, according to Investing.com. Tech watchers at outlets including TechCrunch said analysts will be tracking whether the new leadership team accelerates Apple’s AI strategy and product roadmap in the coming months.
The schedule is already locked in. Cook will guide Apple through the summer, then Ternus will officially take the helm on September 1. In Cupertino and across Apple’s global ecosystem, employees, suppliers and investors will be watching to see how the new CEO balances the company’s hardware muscle with the software and AI work many have been urging Apple to deliver more aggressively.
