A pre-dawn shooting outside First Stop Bar & Grill in North Linden left one person dead and another wounded early Friday, turning a familiar trouble spot into the scene of yet another homicide. Officers rushed to the 1400 block of Oakland Park Avenue just after 4 a.m., where one victim was critically injured and later died at Grant Medical Center, while a second victim showed up at a hospital on their own. The killing is the latest in a string of violent incidents tied to the bar in recent months.
What happened
Columbus Division of Police officers were called to First Stop Bar & Grill around 4:05 a.m. and found two people suffering from gunshot wounds, according to WBNS. One victim was taken to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center and later pronounced dead. The other person, who was also wounded, arrived separately at a hospital for treatment. As of Friday morning, investigators had not released any information about a suspect.
Police say fight may have sparked the shooting
Detectives believe the gunfire may have spilled out from trouble that started inside. "It may have stemmed from an altercation inside the bar," Sgt. Paul Szabo told WBNS. Officers and detectives were canvassing the area for witnesses and surveillance footage, and no arrests had been reported early Friday.
Bar's troubled record and pending court action
The First Stop Bar & Grill at 1427 Oakland Park Ave. has already been targeted in a nuisance lawsuit by the Columbus City Attorney's Office, which accuses the business of a long history of violent crime, liquor code violations and constant police runs. After a March 22 shooting, the city moved to ratchet up the pressure. As reported by The Columbus Dispatch, the city has asked a judge to hold the owners in contempt and scheduled a contempt hearing for April 15. City attorneys say this latest shooting will be folded into the court's review of whether First Stop is allowed to keep operating.
Investigation and community reaction
Neighbors and area leaders have been calling for a crackdown at the Oakland Park address for some time, pointing to a pattern of violence and late night chaos. Inspections in 2024 turned up multiple safety and code violations at the site. Investigators are urging anyone with information to contact Columbus detectives, and late night fight erupts in gunfire outside troubled bar and other local reports note that tips can be shared anonymously with Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at (614) 461-TIPS. Police say they will continue going door to door and reviewing video as they work to piece together what happened.
Legal implications
City Attorney Zach Klein has made it clear that the nightlife economy is not supposed to come with a body count. "We want a vibrant bar and nightlife scene in Columbus, but it can’t come at the expense of public safety," Klein said in a statement. The Property Action Team has told the court it may seek contempt sanctions and a full shutdown of First Stop if the owners do not comply with safety orders, echoing the firm language already laid out in the city's filing.
