Southbound traffic on the SH 130 toll road came to a standstill near Del Valle on Monday morning after a deadly crash shut down the highway and turned the commute through southeast Travis County into a long, slow crawl.
Authorities responded just before 7 a.m., but early on, they had not released a full count of victims or vehicles involved. According to KVUE, the collision took place in the 8100 block of State Highway 130 near the FM 812 exit and was immediately classified as a deadly crash. The station reported that investigators were still sorting out how many vehicles and fatalities were involved, while traffic-monitoring services urged drivers to steer clear of the southbound toll lanes until further notice.
Crash Site Sits Near Circuit of the Americas
The wreck happened close to the Circuit of the Americas complex, a spot where event and daily commuter traffic is often funneled onto two-lane connectors like FM 812 and Elroy Road. COTA's parking and access map lists FM 812 as a primary post-event route off SH 130, a setup that can turn any closure on this stretch into a major headache for drivers; see NASCAR for reference.
This Stretch Has a Recent History of Deadly Wrecks
Crash data and city records show a pattern of serious and fatal collisions along FM 812 and nearby portions of SH 130 in recent years, which helps explain why incidents here can feel especially disruptive. Vision Zero ATX documents multiple fatal crashes on FM 812 and along SH 130, and the City of Austin has posted official fatality releases for wrecks on SH 130 in recent seasons (City of Austin).
Investigators had not released the identities of those involved or a cause for Monday's collision at the time of the initial reports. Officials said more information would be shared once the scene is fully processed. In the meantime, drivers are being told to brace for extended delays and follow directions from local traffic authorities while emergency crews complete recovery and investigation work.
