A 72-year-old man was killed and two other people were seriously hurt Saturday morning in a multi-vehicle crash that shut down U.S. Highway 90 west of Castroville for hours, authorities said. All westbound lanes near Private Road 4620 were closed as first responders worked the wreckage and state troopers launched an investigation, backing up weekend traffic along the far west San Antonio corridor.
Crash details and response
According to FOX San Antonio, a Toyota pickup traveling eastbound lost control, crossed the median and veered into the westbound lanes, where it hit an oncoming SUV and a truck-tractor with trailer. The pickup's only occupant, a 72-year-old man, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck-tractor was not injured.
Medina County Fire/EMS, along with crews from Castroville and Hondo, responded after the crash was reported just before 11 a.m., and worked through the afternoon to secure the scene and clear debris.
Injuries and roadway status
As reported by KSAT, both occupants of the SUV were taken to a San Antonio hospital with serious injuries. Medina County Fire/EMS said westbound lanes of U.S. 90 were reopened at about 5 p.m., although frontage roads in the area stayed packed for hours while tow trucks and heavy equipment removed wreckage and investigators documented the crash site. Officials have not yet released the names of anyone involved in the collision.
Investigation underway
The Texas Department of Public Safety is leading the inquiry into how the pickup crossed into oncoming traffic. Troopers will look at the condition of the vehicles, speed and any potential impairment, FOX San Antonio reported. Authorities are asking anyone who was in the area and captured dash-cam or cellphone video to share it with state investigators. Formal findings, including the identity of the man who died, have not yet been made public.
Why this stretch matters
The U.S. 90 corridor west of San Antonio has been the site of repeated serious crashes as traffic volumes rise, and transportation officials have been rolling out safety projects to try to keep up. KSAT noted that TxDOT opened a westbound-to-eastbound turnaround bridge at State Highway 211 in September 2025 as part of a broader upgrade. The agency has since begun a multi-phase expansion to widen and reconfigure U.S. 90, a near-$500 million effort to add lanes, auxiliary turn pockets and new interchanges aimed at cutting down conflict points along the route, according to Construction Equipment Guide.
Medina County officials and state troopers say the investigation into Saturday's deadly crash remains active, and more details will be released once they are confirmed. Anyone with information or video from the area is urged to contact the Texas Department of Public Safety, as local and state agencies continue to coordinate traffic control and emergency response along the corridor.
